Biafra, officially known as the Republic of Biafra, was a state in West Africa. It existed from May 1967 to January 1970.

It was made up of the states in the Eastern Region of Nigeria. Biafra’s declaration of independence from Nigeria resulted in a civil war between Biafra and Nigeria.

Many people have heard about Biafra, but not many know the history of Biafra and how the name came about.

An Igbo man did not give the name Biafra. Because the major agitators are from the southeastern part of Nigeria, mannny peoppple might be thinking the name came from an Igbo man. But instead, the name came from an Ijaw man ( Ijaw is in Bayelsa state, the south-south part of Nigeria).

The man that suggested the name BIAFRA is from Ijaw, and his name was FRANK OPIGO.

So the history of Biafra cannot be complete without the Ijaw’s, even though many of the people from that side don’t support the movement, but then it’s fantastic to know that it has such a history and connection.
