The Federal Government of Nigeria, on Wednesday, said the reagent machine that at the Ebonyi State Virology center had been configured to be fit enough to conduct a test of coronavirus suspected cases within and outside the South-East geopolitical zone.

The Medical Director of Alex Ekwueme Federal Teaching Hospital Abakaliki, Dr. Emeka Ogah, told journalists in Abakaliki that the center is ready for use to help curtail the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.

He equally commended the Government for making provision of an active laboratory to make it easier for testing of people with the virus within the state and region.

Dr. Ogah further explained that the laboratory could also be used to test not just patients of COVID-19 but also can test for Lassa fever.

He applauded the Ebonyi State Government for their effort in establishing the Virology center before the Federal Government made it active.

“Coronavirus pandemic is a big challenge to all of us. Concerning the result of the pandemic, we are not permitted to talk about it. We are thankful to both the State and Federal governments for their positive contributions.

“We happily wish to announce that the Federal Government has established a laboratory that will be used to test the virus. This will reduce anxiety.

It will be covering the South-East zone. We also have the isolation and treatment centers within the state.

“All these efforts will help us tackle the pandemic. The management of the hospital has provided enlightenment and sanitizers for patients. As of today, no case of coronavirus has been confirmed in the state,” he noted.
