SIWES means Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme. It is a new Directorate under the Vice-Chancellor’s office, which was formed in the year 2012.
SIWES is a skills training programmes designed to expose and prepare students of higher institutions and other Higher Institutions for the Industrial work situation they are likely to meet after their graduation.
This programme is planned and structured based on some specific career objectives which aimed at developing the occupational and competence of each participant.
Consequently, the Students Industrial Work Scheme is a sure and compulsory requirement for all Nigeria university students offering specific courses.
SIWES has begun the payment of its student for completing their compulsory programme for the 2018/2019 session with a sum of fifteen thousand nairas putting a smile on every student’s faces in the nation.
This is an accepted and approved training programme which is part of the recommended minimum Academics Standards in the various degrees programmes for all Nigerian Universities.
SIWES Majorly aimed at bridging the existing gap between theory and practice of science, information and communication, Agriculture, and other professional education programmes in Nigerian Universities.
It also aimed at exposing the young students to Industrial machines and equipment, Offices, Laboratories, Hospitals, Professional work, and methods/ways of safeguarding the work areas and workers in the industries and other organizations.
Before the establishments of the said programme, the employers thus concluded that the theoretical education being received in our Universities never responded to the need of the employers of labour, consequently, the rationale for initiating and designing the scheme by the Industrial Training Funds ITF, in 1973.
SIWES is a tripartite programme involving the students, the employers of labour, and the Universities. It is funded by the Federal Government and jointly coordinated by the Industrial Training Fund (ITF) and the National Universities Commission (NUC).
