The Economic and Finacial Crimes Commission(EFCC), has reacted to the Supreme Court’s nullification of the conviction of former Governor of Abia State of Nigeria, Orji Uzor Kalu.

Also nullified was the judgment against his firm, Slok Nigeria Ltd and Jones Udeogu, a former director of finance & account of Abia State government.

The apex court ordered their immediate trial at the lower court.

Mr. Dele Oyawale, EFCC Head, Media, and Publicity, in a  statement, noted that the court based its verdicts on the grounds, that justice Mohammed Idris, who convicted Orji Uzor Kalu & Others had been elevated to the Court of Appeal even before the judgment & returned to the lower court to deliver his judgment which it’s considered as moves illegal.

EFCC said it considers the judgment of the apex court as quite unfortunates.

The agencies called it a technical ambush againsts the trial of the former governor and others.

The Commission declared preparedness for an immediate retrial of Orji Uzor Kalu.

The spokesman said that EFCC’s pieces of evidence against Kalu and others were serious.

“The corruption charges against Kalu still subsist because the Supreme Court did not acquit him of them.”The entire prosecutorial machinery of the EFCC would be launched in a fresh trial where justice is bound to be served in due cours”, Oyewale added
