COVID-19: Court Finally Takes Decision On River State Demolished Hotels

The last two weeks had the media occupied with news of how Governor Wike demolished two hotels, on the account that the managers violated the executive lockdown order in the state.

However, the owner of the hotel is Gogorobari Needam, and the manager of the demolished prodest Hotel, Bariledum Azoroh, has been convicted by a Magistrate Court in Port Harcourt over defiance of the state government’s COVID-19 orders.

The Magistrate court also fined them the sum of N50, 000 each for contravening the Executive orders of the state Government on COVID-19 lockdown.

It was recalled that His Excellency Governor Wike said that he ordered them to demolish the hotels because they violated his Executive Orders on Coronavirus, despite warning that banned the operation of the hotels across the 23 Local Government Areas of the State. Wike further stated that the main focus on hotels was because of one of the COVID-19 cases enacted from a hotel.

Rita Oguguo, who is the senior Magistrate, delivered her verdicts and ordered that Azoroh, the manager of the hotel, be quarantined at an isolation center in Yakubu Gowon Stadium, for the next 14 days, to ascertain his COVID-19 status and also to pay the demanded fine.
