Save the Children International stated that 19% of mortality among children in Nigeria is caused by pneumonia.

It went ahead to state that 18 children die every hour in Nigeria.

Dr. Adamu Isah, the chief party for the inspiring project, stated this at the official handing over of oxygen cylinders to the pediatric section of the Dutse General Hospital.

He noted that pneumonia with an estimated death of 162,000 in 2019, 443 deaths per day and 18 children in every hour had been identified as the most killer disease claiming the lives of children than any other disease, according to the Inspiring Situation Analysis Report.

According to the report, no less than 14,988 cases of pneumonia are recorded annually in Jigawa State, and it is mainly caused due to lack of existing policy to fight it and high ignorance level on the part of caregivers.

“Even though there is no available data on the number of children that died as a result of pneumonia, it was proved that less than 31.4% of caregivers in the state knows the sign of the disease,” he said.

Dr. Adamu also stated that the project had spent over N18million for procuring personal protection equipment and oxygen cylinders against Covid-19 in Jigawa State.

He said GSK funds the Inspiring project under the Save the Children program and it is being piloted in two local government areas, one from Jigawa and Lagos States respectively and it is aimed to address the killer disease among children
