71-year-old Portuguese president dive into the water to rescue women

71-year-old President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa of Portugal was pictured swimming over in an attempt to rescue drowning women.

The women were seen drowning at an Algarve beach after their kayak capsized, according to BBC.

De Sousa told the press that it was current from a neighboring beach that came into the bay, swept the women.

The Portuguese President is currently on holiday in the Algarve in a bid to promote tourism in the area.

After rescuing the women, President Sousa told journalists, “As there is a very large west current, they were dragged out, turned around, swallowed a lot of water and were not even able to turn [the kayak], nor to climb [on it], or swim, such is the strength of the current.”

The President said another “patriot” on the jet ski also helped him.
