The Federal Government has warned protesters that it will not fold her hands and watch the country thrown into anarchy, stressing that the protest is no longer peaceful.

This is due to the violence that has trailed the current #EndSARS protest in some parts of the country, especially on the attack of Governor Gboyega Oyetola of Osun State on Saturday by protesters.

The minister of Information and Culture. Lai Mohammed issued the warning when he was featured on a late-night Nigeria Television Authority, NTA, news programme, “Weekend File.”

He said the assassination attempt on Governor Oyetola was a clear sign that hoodlums and people with ulterior motives have hijacked the protest.

Mohammed noted that the #EndSARS protest’s original conveners might mean well, but they are no longer in control of the movement.

“Peaceful protest is an integral part of democracy, and that is why the Federal Government in the last 11 days has treated the protesters in a very civilized manner,” Mohammed said.

“But, if you look at what happened to the governor of Osun State, it has gone completely beyond peaceful protest against excesses and abuse of power by the police.

“There is nowhere in the world where a government will fold its arms and allow the country to descend into anarchy.

“We are no longer dealing with #EndSARS but a volatile situation that can lead to anarchy if the government does not take some very firm steps to protect the lives and livelihood of innocent Nigerians,” he said.

He noted that blocking highways are no more peaceful as it makes it difficult for workers and students to access the roads and leave them stranded.

“We have nothing against peaceful protest, but there are civilized ways of doing so,” he said.

“This is by going to a venue where you are not going to disturb other Nigerians because where your own right stops, other persons’ right begins,” he said.
