The former President of Ghana, Jerry Rawlings is dead

He passed away at Korle-Bu Teaching Hosptial in Accra, Ghana on Thursday.

The former military ruler who was born on June 22, 1947, ruled from 1981-2001.

Rawlings led a military junta as the Head of States until 1992, before serving two-term as an elected President.

He founded the National Democratic Congress, NDC, after resigning from the military in 1992.

He became the first President of the Fourth Republic, and in 1996, he was re-elected for a second term of fours.

Rawlings endorsed his Vice-President, John Atta Mills in 2000 as the presidential candidate.

He also served as the African Union envoy to Somalia.
