The out spread of yellow fever has prompted the Bauchi State government to assured embark on mass vaccination across the 20 local government areas of the State to prevent the more spread of the sickness.
On Monday, Dr Rilwanu Mohammed, the Executive Chairman of Bauchi State Primary Health Care Development Agency (BASPHCDA), revealed that there was an outbreak of yellow fever in Ganjuwa Local Government Area, which claimed the lives of 8 persons, while eight others were under treatment.
According to Mohammed, an investigation into mysterious deaths in the area led to the discovery of the outbreak of the Yellow fever disease.
“Recently, mysterious deaths of people were reported in some villages in two wards of Ganjuwa LGA. Immediately our surveillance team moved in and took samples of the victims, and it was confirmed that they were yellow fever positive,” the BASPHCDA chairman had said.
The Bauchi State Commissioner for Health, Dr Aliyu Mai-Goro, while Reacting to the development, expressed dismay over the development.
The state commissioner of health at a roundtable training on child spacing organized on Wednesday by the Bauchi State Public Health Media Networks in Bauchi assured the readiness and commitment of the state Ministry of Health to eradicate the sickness in the area.
In order to curtail and stop the further spread of the sickness in the State, my ministry would soon embark on yellow fever mass vaccination in all local government areas of the State Dr Mai-Goro said.
The State governmentof Bauchi had procured large quantities of yellow fever vaccines for vaccination of people across the State Mai-Goro also added.
Mai-Goro further appealed to parents and guardians to release their children and wards for vaccination to stop the further spread of the sickness, adding that both community leaders and traditional rulers should sensitize their subjects on the need to embrace the vaccination and keep their environment clean for their own good.
