Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State said Atiku Abubakar’s choice of Peter Obi as his running mate in 2019 got Governor Umahi of Ebonyi state upset with the PDP.
Governor Nyesom Wike said with Dave Umahi’s defection to APC, he should be mindful of the South-East’s political future.
On Thursday, in a live broadcast, Wike said Governor Umahi has shown that he is an ungrateful man.
Wike recalled that after the 2018 Peoples Democratic Party convention that produced Atiku Abubakar, the former Vice President consulted widely and selected Peter Obi, a former Anambra state Governor.
Wike’s statement said: “Umahi was living because he wanted to produce or he wanted to be Vice President. You don’t choose who would be the Vice Presidential candidate of anybody. What disturbs me, why do you think that it must be you if anything comes to the South-East? Why do you think so?”
He insisted that Governor Umahi cannot talk of injustice when he practices injustice against the South-East zone by singly installing his two younger brothers; one as the PDP Zonal Deputy State Chairman and the other Vice-Chairman.
“If he believes in equity and justice, will he be doing such? He has planted these people that the State House of Assembly had such audacity to give the National Working Committee (NWC) request to zone the presidency to the South East. Where does such a thing happen? No other party has done any zoning. You can imagine the level of selfishness,” he noted.
Governor Wike dismissed Umahi’s comment that he made the party (PDP) what it is in the region as the financier of its activities.
He noted that such a claim suggests that other Governors like that of Abia and Enugu States are not doing anything to ensure the party’s success in the zone.
