A High Court sitting in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, has sentenced one Pastor Odenigbo Theophilus to seven years in prison for defrauding the sum of one million Naira from a retiree, Mr. Ojo Gbadebo.
In a two-hour judgment delivered on Friday in Ibadan, Justice Muniru Owolabi found the defendant guilty, NAN reports.
Owolabi noted that the prosecutor had proved his charge of advance fee fraud against the convict beyond reasonable doubt.
The judge said the convict defrauded the retiree under the guise that he will invest his one million Naira into an engine oil business and pay him the interest of N80,000 monthly.
Owolabi stated that the convict admitted to having used the money to offset a loan instead of investing in the oil business.
The judge stated that the convict has refused to pay the retiree the capital or interest agreed upon.
He said the convict betrayed the retiree’s trust, who is a pastor in Deeper Life Bible Church in Abolongo, Oyo town, bestowed on him.
After the hearing, Owolabi sentenced the convicts to seven years in prison with hard labour without an option of fine.
The convicts’ counsel, Mr. Ennis Olayinka, had earlier pleaded with the court to be lenient in sentencing his clients, noting that he was the first offender and the breadwinner of his family.
