On Friday, a Nigerian doctor identified as Benjamin Okigbo murdered his wife Theresa Okigbo before killing himself at their Greatwood home, United States.

Chief Eric Robins, who is in charge of Sugar Land Police Department, Texas confirmed the incident on Sunday, adding that the case is still under investigation, NAN reports.

According to Chief Eric Robins, the couple was found around 10:05 am at the Greatwood Subdivision in the 1500 block of Brookstone Lane in what seemed like an apparent murder-suicide.

Chief Eric Robins further stated that preliminary investigations revealed that Benjamin Okigbo strangled Theresa Okigbo to death before killing himself.

“One of the kids dialed 911 apparently when he suspected that a fight or disturbance was going on inside the residence, and the Police said when its officers arrived at the house, they found the couple dead inside their home.

“It appears that it could be a potential murder-suicide, but it has not been ruled,” he said.

While reacting, Mrs. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, the Chairman Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, NiDCOM, described the death of Dr. Ben Okigbo and Mrs. Theresa Okigbo, his wife, as shocking and depressing.

In a statement signed by Abdur-Rahman Balogun, Head, Media, Public Relations and Protocols Unit of NiDCOM in Abuja, Dabiri-Erewa said the commission condoled with the family.

The NiDCOM commission also condoled particularly with the children and the Nigerian community in the United States.

“NiDCOM will continue to monitor police investigations into the unfortunate incident,” the statement said.

As at the time of filing this report, the reason for his action is yet unknown.
