Just as the Nigerian government battles to stop the high level of sale and consumption of hard drugs in the country, two men in Kano will only get cane lashes.
On Tuesday, a Kano Magistrates’ Court sentenced Saddam Ali, 27, and Mohammad Sani, 24, to 12 strokes of the cane each for dealing in illicit drugs.
The defendants were tried for caught in possession of Indian hemp and an intoxicant.
Farouk Ibrahim, the Magistrate, convicted them after they pleaded guilty.
Muhammad Bichi, the prosecutor, had told the court that Sani and Ali committed the offense on December 21 at 9 pm at Plaza, Fagge Local Government Area.
Muhammad Bichi said Fagge Division police officers arrested the duo with ten sachets of Rohypnol, one wrap of Indian hemp, and a liquid substance bottle.
The crime contravenes Section 403 of the Penal Code.
