The federal government has said it has adopted a National Diaspora Policy for Nigeria.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, after the cabinet meeting chaired by President Muhammadu Buhari, confirmed this during a chat with reporters.

Onyeama stated that the formulation of the policy was done by the Nigerian Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM).

The minister said the policy would formalize the relationship between nationals abroad and the government.

“There are 17 or more million Nigerians in the diaspora and they constitute a very important part of the Nigerian community.”

Onyeama added that the policy aims to promote national development through engagement with Nigerians living overseas.

He further explained that the scheme would address how citizens who reside outside Nigeria would vote and the deployment of their skills in different sectors.
