There have been several cases of Nigerians being oppressed by the Special Anti Robbery Squad, popularly known as SARS and this was why people went out hard in the ENDSARS protest.
A Nigerian Engineer, Tochi Nwawuba, is one of the victims of the oppression of SARS and he took to his social media page to share a video, narrating his ordeal in the hands of (SARS) officers. His offence according to him, was that he was keeping his beards.
Tochi narrated his ordeal stating that said he was on his way coming back from work when he was stopped and arrested by SARS officials at Lekki Phase 1 because of his beards. He said when they arrested him, these officials demanded N200k from him to bail himself out on the road.
After back and forth and after them insisting on being grated access to Tochi’s phone and laptop, he eventually bailed himself with N50,000
He wrote that;
“I was arrested yesterday by SARS on my way from work….my bears is now Nigeria problem despite I told them my profession as an engineer with my ID but them no wan gree hear my own, all they want to do is to open my phone and laptop that was at the back of my car and me self no gree for them too and this was how I was kept like a criminal at lekki phase1 last night and was asking 200k for my bailout on the road. May God help us in this country becos we have no human right in Nigeria but I later pay 50k cash that was with me to them on the road becos they told me they will shoot me and put a crime on my head if I don’t cooperate with them.”
Sadly, in Nigeria, not only men get harassed by SARS officials, even girls are victims. 17-year-old, Ochanya Samson, a young girl from Benue State narrated how she was raped and impregnated by a SARS official when she was only 15-years old. This young girl who was staying with her uncle was kicked out of the house by him immediately she had the baby. Before completely throwing her out, this her uncle took her to Aba in Abia State where he sold her baby.
Following her confession, the Police force has arrested the SARS official accused of rape by the girl.
Recall that earlier, a 28-year old girl identified as Ifeoma who just finished her NYSC and had her introduction four days before the incident was in her fiancée’s house when SARS officials stormed to the house to arrest her fiancé. They didn’t meet him and decided to arrest Ifeoma instead. No one knew where she was and her fiancée had to pay someone to try finding where they could have taken her to. Unfortunately, the person didn’t have any information and Ifeoma’s fiancée frustratingly continued his search for her.
It is really sad that the ones who are meant to protect us are the ones harming us.
