Nigeria’s President has appointed Balarabe Shehu Ilelah as the Director-General of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC).

The federal Government through its Minister of information, Lia Mohammed made the announcement in a statement on Friday.

Shehu Ilelah’s appointment is said to last for five years.

The new NBC DG is said to take over from Armstrong Idachaba, who the commission’s acting DG.

Recall that under the tenor of Armstrong Idachaba, the Commission slammed a fine of N5million on Nigeria Info 99.3 FM Lagos in August 2020.

This happened after the station interviewed as former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Obadiah Mailafia, who said bandits told him that a Northern Governor is the commander of the terrorist group known as Boko Haram.

In October 2020, Armstrong Idachaba penalized Arise News, Channels TV and AIT for “unprofessional coverage” of #Endsars protest. The three stations were fined N3million each.

In June 2021, Idachaba ordered all broadcasting stations to stop tweeting after the Federal Government suspends Twitter operation in the country.
