The National Chairman of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Prof Rufai Alkali has disclosed why merger discussions between their presidential candidate, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, and his Labour Party (LP) counterpart, Peter Obi, collapsed.
As per Alkali, the discussions about a merger went apart on the grounds that the LP camp demanded that NNPP surrenders the presidency to them.
He expressed this while talking with newsmen at the NNPP’s secretariat yesterday in Abuja.
“A technical committee was set up to work out the alliance.
“But for the eight hours that they met, the LP camp said just one thing; that Kwankwaso should concede the presidency to Obi, that it was the time of the South East to become the president,” Alkali said.
As per Alkali, the LP camp concurred that Kwankwaso was a good candidate, however said it was the turn of the South East to produce Nigeria’s next President.
The NNPP Chairman claimed that the Obi camp released the discussion on social media while the merger negotiations were ongoing, which prompted the collapse of the alliance talks.
He further expressed that when there was an impasse during the negotiation, the LP camp declared to the media that there was a collapse in the discussions.
