The G-5 governors of the Peoples Democratic Party, or PDP, descended in Enugu State on Friday to launch the party’s campaign.
Governor Rt. Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State, candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) for the Enugu North Senatorial District, Governors Nyesom Ezenwo Wike of Rivers State, Samuel Ortom of Benue State, and Seyi Makinde of Oyo State were all present.
Governor of Abia State Okezie Ikpeazu, who is still in mourning for Prof. Uche Ikonne, the deceased PDP candidate for governor of Abia State, was not present.
According to DAILY POST, the event’s venue, Michael Okpara Square in Enugu, was completely full.
The G5 governors also supported Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi’s bid for a seat in the Senate as the candidate for Enugu North.
All of the party’s candidates for the House of Representatives, Senate, and Governorship received party flags.
The sole person who did not receive the party’s flag was Chimaroke Nnamani, a former governor of the State and candidate for the Enugu East senatorial zone.
His refusal to accept the party flag may not be unrelated to the suspension order issued last week by the party’s national leadership due to his alleged anti-party conduct.
He was also not there for the event.
Dr. Peter Mbah, the party’s candidate for governor in the state, spoke on behalf of the other candidates, praised Ugwuanyi for ensuring a secure environment, high-quality education, rural development, and the maintenance of peace and security, highlighting the fact that these factors were to blame for the large crowd and investors’ rush to invest in the state.
“Mindful of the consolidation of these great achievements, we have vowed to grow the economy, provide dividends of democracy and build upon the transformation that Ugwuanyi has brought to take Enugu to the next level.
“Since the beginning of the fourth republic, Enugu has remained the hope of PDP. We have carried the PDP banner with great pride and we are poised to continue with it,” he said.
The “gathering is to renew the mandate of our great party,” Mbah continued, highlighting the fact that it was made possible by the public’s confidence in the PDP’s state-level leaders.
He was grateful for the G-5 governors’ assistance in exercising leadership and staying firm in the party’s pursuit of justice, equity, and fairness.
Additionally, Governor Ugwuanyi had earlier thanked the State’s citizens for their support of the PDP since 1999 and expressed the hope that they would do the same for all of the party’s candidates in 2023.
In their different statements, Governors Makinde, Ortom, and Wike praised the populace for their support of Ugwuanyi and the PDP and gave them the responsibility of making sure the party received their wards and polling places on election day.
According to Wike, Ugwuanyi is “a reliable, courageous good man whom you can go to war with your two eyes closed,” and he emphasized that the group would continue to back him in all of his endeavors as well as the party’s candidate for governor.
A coalition of 12 registered political parties sponsored Mbah and other PDP candidates at the event, citing Ugwuanyi’s promotion of good administration in the State as their inspiration.
